The Alchemist is a marvelous novel by Paulo Coelho a Brazilian author. The amazing thing about this novel is that it was written in just two weeks and it is one of the world’s best sellers. This novel was translated into various languages. More than 143 million copies were sold in more than 150 countries of the world including their local languages.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, The Alchemist novel was acknowledged as the best seller novel in Portuguese. When you will read this novel you can clearly depict that this is not a fictional story but Paulo Coelho wrote his personal life events in this novel. Paulo Coelho was a sheep man and he spent most of his life in deserts; he also has a wandering soul. He never accepted any order or restrictions. 

Paulo Coelho was born in 1947 in a city named Rio de Janeiro. He was born in a middle class religious family and his family was also hopeful about him that he will become a priest or religious preacher of Christianity. When he went to school he participated in poetry competition. At the time poets were not considered among the reputable class of society. His family realized that he is not going to fulfill their expectations.

They started imposing restrictions on him and even continue to become strict day by day. He became mentally ill and had to attend the school for mentally disabled students. During his treatment he was given electric shocks for a considerable duration. Then one of the doctor from staff talked to his parents that he has no problem. Why you want to kill him? This counselling session changed the perception of his parents. 

He started an independent life. Used to take drugs, learned black magic and even adopted it as his profession, become journalist, remained attached to theater and in this manner his whole life was financially unstable. Paulo’s life took a curve when he started writing anthems and decided to try his luck as author. He proved himself as world’s best author. He always dreamed of a luxurious life. He wanted to become rich and often talked about a treasure. The Alchemist was also themed around that treasure. 

Santiago is a teen shepherd in Africa. He saw a dream that he found a treasure. An old lady told him about that dream and an old man guided him that where he could find this treasure. In this way a guy whose family wants him to become a religious person started his journey from Africa to Pyramids of Egypt through Sahara desert. On his way with a caravan, an alchemist met him. His age was 200 years. Ultimately when that guy reaches to pyramids, he came to know that treasure was not here but where he came from. Treasure was in his house. The ultimate lessons from The Alchemist was that you have to be optimistic in your life. You have to think positive. 

According to author when you desire about something the whole universe starts helping you. But you have to understand the language of universe and make your plans accordingly. The most interested part of this novel was the meeting of Santiago and Alchemist. When Alchemist teaches him life learnings of his 200 years of experiences.
